Growing up in the Adelaide Hills in the 90s, I was often the only Chinese girl in the classroom. My almond-shaped eyes, flat nose, and golden skin were teased, and I spent years chasing a version of beauty that never included me.
Sunglasses were a perfect example. They looked sleek on models with high nose bridges, but once I put them on, they’d slide, pinch, or rest on my cheeks. I still bought them - because there were no other options.
In my 30s, I began reconnecting with my heritage and appreciating the reflection I once tried to erase. What I used to hide, I’m learning to honour. And at the centre of that journey is my grandmother "Ama" - a reminder of where we come from and the strength that lives in us. Having her here to learn from and celebrate is something I treasure deeply.
What once made me feel different is now why I created Studio Yuvara - eyewear designed to fit beautifully, feel comfortable, and honour the heritage that shapes us. Studio Yuvara exists to acknowledge and celebrate you.
